Leaded lights -From Idea to Installation

Leaded lights look beautiful and the stained glass window is custom made so each window is individual and unique. Ever wondered how it is done? Follow this stained glass window’s construction from idea to installation!

1) The customer sends in their photograph of the design that they like, the Stained Glass Studio gives an estimate, when the estimate has been approved full drawings are made and set to scale.

2) These drawings are called Cartoons, they are the key to getting a first class design but also ensure that the leaded light is a workable design.

3) The glass sections are individually cut to size and the colours are carefully matched to ensure it meets with the  customers specifications.

4) The stained glass sections are then set into H section lead cames, this process has a long history and making a leaded light has been done this way for hundreds of years.

5) The lead joints are soldered together, this make a continuos framework  but the stained glass is still loose and would let in a terrible draft.

6) The next step in the leaded light manufacture is to introduce the waterproofing compound. This seals the leaded light excluding water and cold winds.

7) The Leaded light is polished and cleaned ready for fitting into its frame.

8) The finished product is then fully glazed into existing door. Considerable care is taken to allow for expansion and vibration.
